Many departments of the University of Vienna have been working successfully on environmental issues over the last few decades, both in basic research as well as in research groups investigating the social implementation of environmental topics. The Environmental Sciences Research Network (ESRN) aims at increasing the internal and external visibility of the excellent environmental research conducted at the University of Vienna.

The network also forms the structural basis for all researchers working in the field of environmental science at the University of Vienna. The network’s main objective is to encourage networking between researchers from different faculties.

In 2014, the Rectorate established the ESRN on the initiative of four faculties of the University of Vienna. It started its activities in January 2015. To date, six faculties and one research network of the University of Vienna are actively involved in the initiative:

The network represents an important pool of experts for today's most pressing environmental challenges. Until now, around 100 scientists of the University of Vienna have joined the ESRN, which has been positively monitored in 2016 and has been extended for another three years (2017-2019) by the Rectorate.
