- makes environmental research within and beyond the University of Vienna visible
- 2014 founded as "Forschungsverbund Umwelt / Environmental Sciences Research Network" by six faculties
- 2015 start of activities
- 2017 extended by 3 years; renamed "Forschungsnetzwerk Umwelt"
- 2020 extended by another 6 years; renamed "Environmental Research Network"; opening to all faculties and centers

Partnerships & Cooperations
Member of LTER Austria
The ERN is a member of LTER Austria (Austrian Long-Term Ecosystem Research Network).
Since 2021, the ERN is an offical partner and guide of the transdisciplinary "Climate Walk" project by the Climate Wanderers.
The ERN is represented in the UNICA GREEN platform for environmental and sustainability coordinators at the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA).
Cooperation with NHM Vienna
The ERN has been cooperating with the Natural History Museum Vienna for years, for example for their succesful event series "Umwelt im Gespräch".
