"Strategic Career Development", with Ute Riedler

Only for PhD candidates from ESRN member institutions

In this workshop, we focus on strategic decisions you can make throughout your PhD time to foster your career. We talk about the skills needed to succeed, outside or inside academia, and reflect on areas of your personal development. We identify your own brand and analyse how the results of your academic work, your practice, teaching and personal skills, can be shown in your CV, within your scientific community and during job interviews.

Furthermore, we will look at your work-life balance and develop suitable stress minimising techniques and time management tools:

  • Professional and private goals
  • Pillars of an (academic) career: research – teaching – practice - leadership experience and management skills
  • Successful self-presentation
  • Transferable skills, career outside academia
  • Networking successfully
  • Life-domains-balance
  • Time management

Methods: Lecture, discussion, seminar handbook, group work, exercises

Goals: Specify your short-, mid- and long-term career goals; make strategic decisions; foster your career.
